Great to See You!

They’re instruments that are rich in history, and originally go back over 150 years. Cigar box guitars first developed in the 1860’s after cigars became sold in boxes in order to be taxed. During the Civil War, soldiers spent precious “down time” using the boxes, hardware and wire to fashion these instruments. The mechanics were crude at first, and for many, the parts (often from random household items) pretty much available to anyone.  But the music, the ability to make music, became the key ingredient.

Over time, cigar box guitars became more refined and played by artists like Jimi Hendrix, Keith Richards, Bo Diddley. Lightnin’ Hopkins, Billy Gibbons and Paul McCartney. They’re unique instruments, and for those who love their sound, they’ve always had their own kind of spirit.

Today, at Waterside Guitars we believe in that spirit. The components are the latest, the construction is first rate, and the “feel” is carefully calibrated for those who play our instruments. We build these instruments – by hand – to play as good as they look.

Because, in the end, it’s about the music. It always has been.

Building Your Custom Instrument. The Right Way.

Outside The Box

We use only wooden cigar boxes for the right tone, but we’ve also made instruments from oil
cans, antique tins and more. We work around the original graphics, or we can apply any photo, design or graphics you want.

Our Neck of The Woods

Guitar, ukelele, banjo and mandolin strings put tremendous pressure on the neck of the
instrument. So, we only use solid oak or maple to add strength and resist bending over time.

We Love Sexy Curves

On finer instruments, you’ll notice the end of the neck curves down a bit where the tuners are – that’s called a scarf joint. We think that help keep strings in tune and takes pressure off the neck. We can also use “extended” necks (the old school way to do headstocks) but a scarf joint adds a lot.

Bridge Work

To give proper tone and intonation, we use fixed bridges that are adjustable to give you
flexibility for the way you play (chording, finger picking, slide, etc.). For acoustic instruments,
we also use wood-and-bone “floating” bridges for similar adjustments.

Pull The Plug. Or Don’t.

We know how these instruments should sound and how to make them sound that way. That
means correctly placing components and sound holes to maximize tone on acoustic
instruments. It also means choosing and installing pickups and electronics precisely for superb
sound for electronic ones.

Yep, That Sounds Right!

We make sure every Waterside instrument is properly set up before it leaves our shop. That’s
painstaking and time-consuming work setting tone and intonation correctly. We make certain
your instrument sounds amazing the moment you start playing.
